The koi pond way

This morning when I woke up it was 58 degrees again. Mimi and I fortified ourselves with scrambled eggs and oatmeal with applesauce and cinnamon, then suited up and headed out for the longest of our walks, the walk to the koi pond. Two miles there, two miles back. The sun was low and the trail is protected by huge oaks, so the walk was pleasantly cool. Cicadas hummed in the trees. We started a doe and two fawns, then we startled a black squirrel. The woods had that special summer-woods-in-the-morning-with-cicadas smell. When we made it to the pond, we found that we didn’t have any snacks to feed the fish… but someone had obligingly left corn chip crumbs at the edge of it, so we were able to stir up the fish anyway. I love koi. I could have watched them all morning.
