Sparks, who has done 100% of the vegetable garden work this year, got enough tomatoes for us to have our annual BLT lunch and to make three quarts of tomato sauce. He grew San Marzanos for sauce this year, and the sauce is indeed a deep, lovely, special thing. I am trying to be thoughtful when I use it.

The tomato strainer was his grandma Ede’s. It was still in the box with its shipping label. It shipped in 1976 for $1.05.
