Bread and butter pickles

Sparks, as I have said before, is the one in this relationship who knows how to can stuff. He recently made bread and butter pickles. The sheer volume of cucumbers meant we were going to have a LOT of them… so he canned them in half-gallon jars. The one on the left is a clear jar, the one on the right is an old blue glass one. He found a website that says the thicker lips on the blue jars actually make for a more secure seal, so they’re great for canning.

He didn’t do any jam this year. The sad truth is that as cozy and pleasant as it is to make jam and to have jars of it in the pantry, we don’t actually eat jam. We’ve been pawning jars off on guests and family. I hope they eat jam…
